The One Wall

During the first iteration we generated a lot of ideas about what the future might look like, what problems come with each scenario and how to possibly solve them. At the end of this iteration we had the general idea of our concept (a single room that changes to fit the needs of the user). We had built a big MDF prototype that we showed to architecture students to validate our idea.

The second iteration we focused on the outside. We decided to create our room inside a shipping container due to the standardization and transportability of them. We tested various container configurations and with the help of architecture students we picked the best one.

The third and final iteration was about the details and interior working of the flat. We came up with some ideas for folding furniture and appliances and created a 3D model that finally became a VR experience to demonstrate our design. This helped us get a feel of how small everything was and whether this would be a comfortable space to live in.

In this first design project I learned a lot about group dynamics, like how to stay productive while having a good time. This is a precise balancing act that I think is really important. We also made some excursions and field trips which I found very useful for finding inspiration and context for our project. I also got a general idea about how a design project is structured. Furthermore, I was able to put a lot of the things I had learned during the first semester to use, like sketching (as learned in Exploratory Sketching), prototyping, ideating (as learned in From Idea to Design) and validating (as learned in User-centered Design).
