Chair 92 - The story of my life

For this assignment, our group (Iris Berden, Quinta Bonenkamp, Emma Driesse and I) dug into the history of the Amsterdam ArenA to look for the emotional value of the chair. We wanted to treat the chair with care, and tell it's story. What has the chair been through? What has it witnessed? Of course we associate the ArenA mostly with football and Ajax. The chair must have seen a lot of matches, goals, triumphs, losses and some riots. But there is more to the ArenA. Our chair was there at concerts, festivities, and other events. Our chair saw legendary artists like Madonna (2006), Michael Jackson (1996), David Bowie (2004) and U2 (2017) as well as Dutch culture classics like 'De Toppers' (2005 - present), André Rieu (2009) and André Hazes (2003). We captured all this on the chair, tattooing it by engraving the plastic and then applying a wash of white ink. I made the illustrations for the seat and back-rest while the rest of the group worked on putting the seat together, carving the legs and backrests out of wood. No screws or nails were used, making the chair very easy to recycle. The only materials used are wood and plastic.
